RAKU
The making of Raku ware was initiated by Chojiro, the
first generation of the Raku family, during the
Momoyama period (1573-1615). Porous earthenware it is
covered with a lead glaze, fired at very low
temperature until the glaze melts, and then taken out
with tongs and quickly cooled. The clay is porous and
soft, tends to be asymmetrical and is sometimes very
organic in form. The glazes are cracked and frequently
lustrous or iridescent.
